Do electric cargo tricycles with larger wheels have an advantage when climbing steep hills?
Yes,electric cargo tricycles with larger wheels do have certain advantages when climbing steep hills, but the benefit is limited and must be matched with appropriate motor torque and vehicle structure.
Larger wheels effectively reduce rolling resistance and allow the tricycle to roll over bumps, ruts, and rough terrain more easily, which helps maintain momentum on uphill roads. They also provide a larger contact angle with sloped surfaces, improving stability and reducing the chance of bottoming out on uneven hills. In addition, for the same motor speed, larger wheels can achieve higher linear speed, though this may reduce torque unless geared properly.
However, larger wheels are not always better. If the motor lacks sufficient torque, bigger wheels can actually weaken climbing ability by increasing initial resistance and reducing effective traction. For extremely steep slopes,a moderate wheel size with deep-tread,high-grip tires often performs better than simply using oversized wheels.
In practical heavy-duty cargo applications, wheel size is usually designed to balance climbing performance, load capacity, and driving stability rather than being maximized.
